tilt-shift pictures

Hi everyone,

Do you remember about tilt-shift technique I posted before? Yes, a technique that makes pictures and videos like miniatures. As I said, it is always fun to do something new, so I tried it. It is a quit easy technique you can use especially for photography, so I used it to my pictures. I found two ways to do tilt-shift and both ways are free. I used free tilt-shift software. You can buy good software that can give you better tilt-shift effect without affecting a picture quality. However, because tilt-shift is a simple technique, free software also does a good job. Now, I will introduce both tilt-shift software and their pros and cons.

Stop Motion Technique

(picture from wikipedia)

Hi everyone,

Have you ever watched the animation Pingu when you were a kid? I did and I really enjoyed it. How about Wallace and Gromit? I enjoyed this one, too. Also, my favorite Disney movie is Nightmare Before Christmas. Maybe you already found the connection between these animations. They are all clay animations that use stop motion technique and I want to write about this stop motion technique today.

Film technique – tilt-shift technique

Hi, everyone

It is always fun to do something you never done before. It’s the same in a filmmaking. Today, I want to talk about this technique called a “tilt-shift technique.” It is an interesting technique that makes objects in pictures and videos like miniatures (for more information, click here). This technique goes good with photography, but even with videos, too. However, it is better to speed up the videos, so the moving objects in the videos look like unmovable objects that were shot in high-speed motion. Actually, it is a simple mechanism. Normally, you need to unfocused the edges of your pictures/videos to give the tilt-shift effect. It’s not always the edges, but it really depends on the visual structure of the pictures/videos. A tilt-shift effect matches better with wide shot pictures/videos because objects in the frame are smaller and can look more like miniatures. Also, a high angle makes s tilt-shift technique more effective, so it’s better to shoot from the top of a building or somewhere high enough to shoot the objects from the higher angle. There is a tilt-shift lens to shoot tilt-shift photographs and videos, but you can also add a tilt-shift filter to the pictures/videos by using editing software (a tilt-shift lens is pretty expensive, so some people make a tilt-shift lens from a cheap lens, too! It looks complicated, but if you are interested to make your own tilt-shift lens, click here). Now, I want to share some pictures and videos that use a tilt-shift technique.

Useful Filmmaking Websites

Hi everyone,

Today, I want to introduce some websites that I use for my filmmaking. I really enjoy reading these websites and they help my filmmaking a lot. Not only the filmmaking, but also to get information about new cameras and their software. Of course, there are numbers of filmmaking websites and you can find them easily on the Internet and everybody has a different style (similar, but different). The best way to find a website you really enjoy is by researching through the Internet. Maybe it takes time, but someday you will find a website that really entertains you. So far, these are the websites I follow now.

Cameras I want to get some day

Hi everyone,

Today, I want to talk about cameras. First of all, I don’t have my own camera, so I barrow it from my school. I usually use Canon kiss series, either x5 or x4. Of course x5 is a newer model and I prefer using x5, but I use x4 when x5 is not available. There are both good cameras especially for those of you who are just starting filmmaking. Although x5 is a newer model and seems like it has better performance, there aren’t many differences between x4 and x5. The biggest difference you can see is that x5 has a vari-angle monitor. A vari-angle monitor is a monitor you can flip and change monitor’s angle to any direction you want. A vari-angle monitor is useful when you set the camera below or above your eye level because you can adjust the monitor angle and don’t need to bend your entire body or to reach up to the monitor. There are other minor differences, but they won’t dynamically affect your shooting.

Some of My First Videos

Hi, everyone

Today I want to share videos that I made before. Actually, I should have done this in my first blog post, but I completely forgot about it. I think it is the easiest way to tell what I did, what I can do and what I need to work on. I always to find things that I want to fix and points I could have done better and I believe it is good and important to watch over the videos you made. There are many things that you couldn’t see when you were making a video. It is one way to improve you filmmaking.

The first video is a documentary-like interview. I interviewed an amateur musician Ken Sato in Japan who works at a rock bar in Roppongi, Japan. He is a vocal (sometime plays keyboard) and his dream is to be a top musician in the world.

How to use AviUtl

Hi everyone,

Today, I’m going to introduce how to use AviUtl. I’m not going to teach complicated editing techniques, but basic techniques to edit a short and simple video + a slide show with pictures and music.

I strongly recommend you to download the editing expansion plugin. This plugin gives you more opportunities to the software. You can download the plugin from the same website where you download AviUtl. It’s in the block under AviUtl download links that says “拡張編集Plugin” (means editing expansion plugin in Japanese).

AviUtl – Free Editing Software

Hi everyone,

For my first blog post, I want to introduce this free editing software AviUtl. This software is only for Windows and there is no Mac version.

You can do basic editing and more with this software.

AviUtl is Japanese editing software created by KEN-kun. You can go to his website and download the latest version (for now, the latest version is “version0.99m,” click “aviutl99m.zip” and it will start downloading). Once you downloaded the file, extract it and you can use AviUtl without installing the program.
